Generally common statewide in NC, but rare along the NC Outer Banks, bluebirds are in the thrush family (Turdidae).

When bluebirds show up on Pea Island along the Outer Banks, they should be carefully checked for vagrant western species. Unfortunately, this one is "just" an Eastern, distinguished by the rusty color in the throat and upper breast.
