Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis)

In North Carolina, Red-breasted Nuthatches breed only in the high mountain coniferous forests. From fall through spring, they are erratic winter visitors, mostly in the eastern half of the state. Occasionally they can be fairly widespread and common in the winter, but in most winters they are uncommon at best.

Winter 2012-2013 saw a huge irruption of Red-breasted Nuthatches in North Carolina. This one's enjoying my suet feeder.
