Common and widespread across North America, Red-winged Blackbirds form huge colonial winter roosts in North Carolina, especially in areas of the coastal plain like Pocosin Lakes and Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuges. Flocks can number in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of birds.
