Yehl Skipper (Poanes yehl)

An uncommon resident mostly found in the coastal plain and sandhills in NC, Yehl Skippers have two broods. Adults may be seen in May/Jun and Sep/Oct, with the second brood being the most prominent. The VHW ray may be very faint to fairly prominent, depending on wear, it being wider or more prominent with wear. Above the ray is usually one pale spot, and below the ray are two pale spots. The under side of the male has a bright rusty-orange ground color, and the spots are yellow. The female is rusty-brown on the under side (highly variable with wear) and the spots are whiter and often rounder. On the upper side, males show much orange with a long, black stigma, while females are dark brown with large orange blocks. Thus, males differ considerably from the females as seen from both the top side and the bottom side. Compare with Broad-winged Skipper and Aaron's Skipper.
