Mole Kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster rhombomaculata)

Common away from the mountains in NC, Mole Kingsnakes live in a variety of habitats, burrow very well underground, and eat small mammals, lizards, and other snakes.

This two feet long Mole Kingsnake was curled up in one of our research plots in Duke Forest. Usually living underground, Mole Kingsnakes are infrequently encountered on the forest floor, so this was a special treat!
