Rough Earth Snake (Virginia striatula)

These small snakes are harmless to humans and occur in the eastern 2/3 of the North Carolina. They are secretive, inhabiting moist woods & fields, feed on worms, insects, gastropods, and they spend much of their time underground.

Rough Earth Snakes are "rough" because each scale has an obvious ridge or "keel", seen here as a line running through the middle of the scale
