Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus holbrooki)

Common in the sandhills and much of the NC coastal plain in loose sandy soils. Spadefoot Toads are variable in color from nearly black to lighter shades of brown or gray.

When first handled, they often tuck their legs up and close their eyes.

Spadefoot Toads are named for the hard horn-like structures on their feet which allow them to dig into loose soils and disappear from sight.
