Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa spp.)

From Greek meaning wood cutters, Xylocopa carpenter bees are large and are distinguished from bumblebees by having mostly hairless abdomens.

This species is common and widespread in eastern North America. It resembles a bumblebee but note the shiny, mostly hairless and mostly black abdomen.
