Common on disturbed soils and along fresh and brackish marshes in the coastal plain, Eastern Baccharis is less common in the western half of North Carolina.

Baccharis has separate male and female flowers. The females develop showy white fruits.

Upper leaves often entire while lower leaves often with a few large teeth. Leaves secrete a sticky resinous substance, which may deter herbivory.
