Lake Mattamuskeet Vistas

The largest natural lake in North Carolina, Lake Mattamuskeet in Hyde Co., NC is a haven for birds and birders.

Tens of thousands of Tundra Swans and Snow Geese winter here. The blurry flock in the back of this photo behind the Tundra Swans was comprised of a few thousand Snow Geese.

Hwy 94 forms a causeway crossing the western half of the lake and creating an excellent vantage from which to scan for waterfowl. Vegetation along the causeway usually harbors many wintering birds and is often the place to discover a warbler or other songbird rarely seen in the winter in NC.

A platform along the causeway is part of the Charles Kuralt Trail and is great for wildlife viewing. The island of Bald Cypress just out from the platform often has ducks, geese, and cormorants around the base and raptors such as Bald Eagles perched in the trees.

Hunting is allowed at designated blinds on designated days. Be sure to check the schedules before heading out. When hunters are not present, some of these areas, like this one off the Wildlife Drive, make for great viewing.
