Below are photos shot of various invertebrates during a 6 day trip to the Manuel Antonio area of Costa Rica. This page includes butterflies, moths, and many other insect species, plus spiders, scorpions, millipedes, and crabs. Wax-tailed Planthopper (Pterodictya reticulata)

These huge (for a plant hopper) insects produce a long waxy tail that easily breaks off when disturbed to startle or foil predators. It then regrows. Here, a large and a small individual were stuck together.

Many species have been described in this group of organisms. Although they looks scary and dangerous, they are relatively harmless to humans. These are also known as Vinegaroons because some can spray a vinegar-like liquid as a defense mechanism.
