House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus)

Common in NC around civilization, House Finches are native to the western US, but were introduced to the eastern US in the 1940s and have spread throughout the country.

Adult males show varying degrees of reddish coloration on upper chest, head, and eyebrows. Note, however, the very top of the head is brown and the underparts are heavily streaked (unlike Purple Finch males where the tops of their heads are reddish and the underparts are lightly streaked).
